If you’ve landed here, you’re serious about the Maldives — and you should be. This is one of the last places on Earth where the photographs actually undersell the reality.
I’ve been booking Maldives holidays for over two decades. I’ve seen resorts rise and fall, I’ve handled panicked calls from honeymooners who booked the wrong island, and I’ve found the places that consistently deliver. This list is the result of all of that.
No paid placements. No press trips. Just honest picks.
How to choose an overwater bungalow in the Maldives
Before the list, a few things most guides won’t tell you:
Atoll location matters more than the resort brand. The Maldives spans 26 atolls across 900km. North Malé is cheapest to reach (short speedboat). South Ari and Baa require seaplanes — add $400–600 per person return, but the marine life is incomparably better.
House reef vs. no house reef. Some resorts sit on dead sand. Others have a thriving reef 20m from your deck. For snorkellers, this is the difference between an extraordinary holiday and a very expensive pool holiday.
The overwater premium is real but variable. At some resorts, overwater bungalows are genuinely transformative. At others, you’re paying $500 extra per night for a view of a lagoon you could see for free from the beach villa.
The 10 best overwater bungalows in the Maldives
1. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
The one that started it all. Conrad’s underwater restaurant and two-island concept still sets the standard. The overwater villas on the adults-only Rangalifinolhu island have direct lagoon access, glass floor panels, and a house reef that delivers whale sharks.
Best for: Couples and honeymooners who want the full fantasy.
Location: South Ari Atoll — seaplane required (~30 min from Malé).

No shoes, no news — that’s the resort’s motto, and they mean it. The overwater villas here are the largest in the Maldives, some stretching 1,800 sq ft across the lagoon. No TVs. No alarm clocks. Just ocean.
Best for: Digital detox, couples, anyone who finds Conrad too polished.
Location: North Malé Atoll — 20 min speedboat from the airport. No seaplane needed.

Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and Landaa Giraavaru sits at the heart of it. Manta rays gather here in extraordinary numbers between June and November. The overwater bungalows are large, the spa is exceptional, and the marine biology team runs some of the best dive programming in the Maldives.
Best for: Divers, snorkellers, families (there’s a kids’ club).
Location: Baa Atoll — seaplane required (~25 min).

Book direct vs. through Expedia: For most resorts, Expedia gives you price matching plus points. For peak season (December–April), I always recommend securing dates months in advance — the top overwater categories sell out first.
Travel insurance is non-negotiable. Seaplane transfers cancel in bad weather. It happens. Make sure your policy covers trip interruption.
Best time to go: November to April for calm seas and predictable weather. June to November for manta rays in Baa Atoll but some rain. The Maldives is tropical — there’s no truly bad season.
